Product Review: Self-Guided Tour of the Bible

When we desire to have a closer relationship with God, the best way to do so is through the practice of spiritual disciplines.  The practice of spiritual disciplines helps us grow in the knowledge of God, his teachings, and how to live life, pleasing in His sight.  It is through studying God’s Word that we receive instructions in righteousness that allows us to be transformed by the renewing of minds. (2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 12:2)  There is a multitude of resources and tools available to assist us with the understanding of the Scriptures.  Sorting through the numerous resources and tools to obtain the basic knowledge of Bible can be a daunting task and disheartening to some who are new to Bible Study.

Christopher D. Hudson has written a plain, user-friendly companion resource book entitled, “Self-Guided Tour of the Bible.” This book is designed to be used with the Bible.  As the name implies, it allows one to study at his/her own pace. It is written using real-world scenarios and modern day examples to illustrate different concepts in the Bible.  It features maps, timelines, overviews, and charts all full-colored and reproducible for classrooms or small group studies.  There are 242 pages. Hudson cleverly uses a museum analogy to feature and highlight the various components of this companion guide.  Each chapter acts as an “Exhibit Hall.” Each “Exhibit Hall” provides a description of content featured.

This book serves well as a quick reference guide with multiple maps, charts, overviews, and timelines at your fingertips.  It would be great for new theologians beginning the journey of discovery of God’s Word. It is ideal for teaching biblical foundation training and teaching in a small group setting and for individual study.  I would definitely recommend this as a resource that should be a part of your arsenal.

Product Review: God in Real Life

Rose Publishing’s book entitled, “God in Real Life,” is a compilation of previously published pamphlets by Rose Publishing focusing on a teen audience.  The book in its entirety is a 130 pages in length with a 125 pages of actual content. A Study Guide is included. The questions are designed to promote an in depth discussion while fortifying essential doctrine relating to the aforementioned topics. The Study Guide starts from pages 112 to page 127.  This book is designed to act as a six week guide addressing topics such as:

Tough Questions about Christianity

This segment explores the questions that most adolescence begin to have after encountering scientific facts, people who practice different belief systems, and the behavior of proclaimed Christians.  This section asks the questions then examines the assumptions, challenges, and encourages teens to reflect.

Worldwide Views and Religions

This unit surveys the various belief systems and their differing viewpoints regarding the nature of God and humanity.  It explains the significance of the worldwide views and how these views can shape a person’s character and behavior.

Who is Jesus and Why does He Matter

This section provides a comprehensible clarification and description about Jesus as the second person of the Godhead, as a man, and as our Savior. It further explains Jesus’ mission was not about religion by relationship.

Knowing God’s Will for Your Life

This component provides guidelines for learning what God’s will. While there is no easy answers to respond to the question, Rose Publishing provides four points of power to assist in identifying God’s will. Additionally, it reminds the reader of God’s promises, desires, and faithfulness.

 Answers to Evolution

This chapter of the book highlights the scientific theories that challenges the Scriptures relating to creation.  It provides compelling arguments refuting scientific claims and actual statements made by world renowned scientist.  It offers additional resources for further inquiry.

This book also includes chapters regarding sex and the occult.  I believe this is a great resource to utilize for small group, Sunday School, or Bible Study with the teens or new Believers without any previous Christian experience. The Study Guide is a bonus benefit allowing for an assessment of what the student learned and what subject matter may require further discussion.  The layout of the book is intended to be aesthetically appealing to the teens; however, some of the font utilized makes it difficult to read.   Despite the problematic fonts, I would recommend this to teachers and leaders.

Product Review: Evidence for the Resurrection

Rose Publishing has distributed a pamphlet entitled, “Evidence for the Resurrection.”  It is a 14 page pamphlet (with 12 pages of actual content) that responds to seven objections and addresses four theories raised by skeptics.  Skeptics question the deity of Jesus Christ and produce arguments that the accounts of Jesus Christ is that of a mythological figure or a mortal man and His ministry is folklore.

This publication denotes prominent Scriptures to illustrate biblical truths relating to Jesus’ resurrection.  However, it also identifies archaeology and historical discoveries that supports the reliability of the Bible.  Although I appreciate the attempt, I believe that there needs to be more information provided from the archaeology and historical points that coincide with the Scriptures.  If this document acts as an apologetic writing then there needs to be more balance. Typically, skeptics will reject biblical truths because the Bible is the source.

I believe those that have questions relating to the resurrection but believe that Jesus is God would find the information compelling read. Also, I believe that Christians who are actively evangelizing would benefit from the information in this publication.  It would also be a conversation opening for small groups, Bible Study, or Sunday school.

Product Review: Following Jesus

Rose Publishing has issued a pamphlet entitled, “Following Jesus.” This pamphlet is a welcome basket to the New Believer. It covers the fundamentals of Christian Conduct after accepting the Gift of Salvation. The pamphlet contains 11 pages of actual content briefly covering topics regarding Spiritual Gifts/Disciplines, Christian Living, and the Reliability of the Christian Faith.

This pamphlet reminds the New Believe to strive for “progress and not perfection” because becoming a true disciple does not occur immediately. Forgiveness, repentance, and the assurance of Salvation with scriptural references are briefly addressed to help reassure New Believers can be forgiven when they sin after repenting from a sincere heart. The four “P”s (Praise, Provide, Pardon, and Protect) structure as it relates to The Lord’s Prayer to aid New Believers to stay connected to God.

Additionally, suggestive scriptural readings are prescribed with a recommended criteria to follow while reading these scriptures to obtain the most out of a biblical study. The importance of fellowship, tithing, and evangelism are emphasized. It also addresses the concerns that most New Believer have regarding the authority/reliability of the Bible, evidence of the Resurrection, and answering the question if Jesus is the only way for salvation.

I believe this pamphlet would work well in New Membership Classes or as a tool to utilize when evangelizing. I believe the pamphlet could explore certain topics deeper for clarity. Overall, I would recommend this to teachers or spiritual leaders who interact with those who seek to learn more about following Jesus.

Product Review: Pursuing Jesus

The “Pursuing Jesus” pamphlet is very similar to the “Following Jesus” pamphlet. “Pursing Jesus” is a revised, more contemporary version of “Following Jesus” geared towards appealing to the youth. The layout, format, and overall design is edgier and more colorful. The length is the same. While still scripturally based, there are less scriptures while maintaining scriptural references and has more of a questions and answers layout.

While I do appreciate that this has been designed with teens in mind, the graphic design and fonts used would not give you the impression of Christian pamphlet at first glance, but something that you would see to advertisement a secular Halloween flyer. The font used for headers appear as scratches in blood red color. The cover display a female face that is pale with wide horizontal stripe of red across the eyes and a wide vertical stripe that comes down the middle.

The same questions used in “Following Jesus” are used and sometimes re-worded in “Pursing Jesus.” As in the previous pamphlet, there are suggested scriptural references provided for memorization. As I have been seeking content for my Teen Sunday School class, I wanted to review both products. Initially, I believed “Pursing Jesus” was a continuous of “Following Jesus.” This is not the case they are virtually the same product. Overall, I prefer “Following Jesus” over the “Pursing Jesus” pamphlet because I like the layout, format, and overall design better for teaching. Both products are good for introducing New Believers to Christ. I would recommend it be used in small group settings to facilitate discussions about what it means to be a Christian.

Product Review: Answer to Evolution

Our teens are faced with peer pressure and ideologies that conflict with what they learn in school. It is critical that we provide them with biblical foundations that will keep them rooted in their faith and respond to the various dogmas that they are inundated with continuously. As I endeavored to identify biblical resources for our teens at our church, I had the opportunity to review “Answers to Evolution” issued by Rose Publishing.

This pamphlet provides sixteen questions about evolution and the origins of life. Both scientific and scriptural perspectives are examined. Specifically, it addresses the numerous scientific theories highlighting the erroneous points that conflict with the Bible. It offers additional resources for a more in-depth study on the topics. This is definitely a conversation starter that will aid in discussion of sciences versus God.

I believe that the pamphlet is balanced. It will aid teenagers who are navigating through science classes that are introduced to conflicting accounts on body development, evolution of life forms, and origins of life. It will give teenagers the opportunity to perform more research into these theories and the Scriptures. I am hopeful that Rose Publishing will produce a more in depth book to address these issues. I would recommend this pamphlet to Sunday School teachers or parents that have children questioning the accuracy of the Scriptures relating to creation.

Product Review: How We Got the Bible Video Study Series

Dr. Timothy Paul Jones, addresses the concerns that many have concerning the authenticity of the Bible within six session video series. There are numerous translations and many different reports on how the books of the Bible were organized and the responsible parties for this collection of books known as our Bible. Many question whether the events recorded in the Bible are fictional. Is it possible that over hundreds of years that the accuracy of the Holy Scriptures be preserved? Another area of concern for many including scholars relates to the writers who wrote the Scriptures years after the events occurred.

How can we be assured that the Bible we read today is the accurate and infallible word of God? Dr. Jones thoroughly explains how the Bible was meticulously translated and verified through the testimonies of eyewitness accounts. He describes a culture of memorization with people who were diligent and dedicated to learning and maintaining biblical truths. Although events were record years after they occurred, the eyewitnesses were still living to verify and affirm the accuracy of the events. Dr. Jones provides prime examples of writers of the Scriptures verifying facts with eyewitnesses and encouraging readers of the Scriptures to verify the accuracy with these witnesses.

I found the teachings on this topic persuasive and answers questions that many Christian have relating to trusting the authenticity of the Bible. Dr. Jones makes the study relevant to our modern day practices and experiences and expounds upon the culture and age that the Scriptures were written. His presentation is enthusiastic and is not monotone. This series contains an animation video would be great for children as it provides a comprehensible lesson on the origins of the Bible in a relatable fashion. The animation video is fun while being educational. I would definitely recommend this series for all Christians. This is a great series especially for Bible Study, Sunday School, and/or New Members Classes.
